![]() ![]() Plus, I've gotten to meet some Nebraska fans in recent years and they are a hardy, loyal bunch. But unlike Arkansas, the University of Nebraska is the only Football Bowl Subdivision program in the entire state, so things are a lot more magnified about the Huskers in Nebraska in terms of fan and media attention than even the Razorbacks are here. Like Arkansas, Nebraska is pretty much defined by one university. ![]() It was such a cool atmosphere being among what they like to call the "sea of red." In 2013, before running a half-marathon in Omaha, me and my wife had the good fortune to get tickets to a Nebraska game the day before. The Huskers' recruiting pipeline in Texas and in the South dried up and the state and region doesn't produce a great deal of elite high school talent. Nebraska felt like, academically, it was in line with the other schools in the conference.īut athletically, and especially in football, it hasn't been a great fit. The move to the Big Ten hasn't helped either. But Devaney still has 90 more wins than Frost. Frost also has the same amount of losses as Bob Devaney, the coach who really put Nebraska football on the map. If you want an interesting comparison, Frost now has more losses than either Riley or Solich had in their tenures. Saturday's loss dropped Frost to 11-20 in his third season. Frost was coming off a successful run at Central Florida, leading the Knights to an undefeated record before returning to his alma mater.īut even Frost has been unable to reverse the Huskers' skid. Nebraska thought it finally found the cure for its coaching blues with the hire of Scott Frost, a native of the state and the quarterback of the Huskers' last title team. But Riley went three-and-out, winning 19 games in three seasons. But Pelini's temper may have been his undoing, as he was known for his sideline rants at players, along with an infamous rant geared at the Nebraska fan base.įollowing Pelini was Mike Riley, who had a successful tenure at Oregon State. He had winning records in all seven of his seasons at Nebraska, and won no fewer than nine games a season. Looking back on it now, Pelini did have a good degree of success. The Huskers replaced Callahan with Bo Pelini, who had been a former defensive coordinator with Nebraska. He lasted just four seasons, twice resulting in losing records. It was a head-scratching move then, and it's still a head-scratching move.Ĭallahan, with his NFL background and mentality, was a poor fit in Lincoln. Then to replace Solich, the Huskers brought in Bill Callahan, fired by the Oakland Raiders a year after taking them to the Super Bowl. But the moment which may have really set Nebraska on a downward slope took place two years later, when coach Frank Solich - a former Husker player who had also been a longtime assistant on Osborne's staff - was unceremoniously fired.Īt the time, the Nebraska administration defended the move, noting the Huskers were about to slip amid fear of Oklahoma and Texas taking over the Big 12 Conference. Perhaps the decline started after that national-title game loss to Miami following the 2001 season. So what happened to one of college football's premier programs? It will assure Nebraska of its fourth straight losing season, and five out of the last six. That home loss to Minnesota, on Saturday afternoon, dropped the Huskers to 2-5. Instead of rolling past overmatched foes in Lincoln's Memorial Stadium, the Huskers are now losing at home to the likes of Illinois and Minnesota. Nebraska is a shell of what it once was and what it used to be. ![]() Or even if you're not but still an avid college football fan. It hasn't been good if you are a fan of the Huskers.
